needed to breath new life into Mnazi Mmoja garden

THE Ilala Municipal Council is in need of at least 400 million/- to do a major facelift job on the famous Mnazi Mmoja water fountain in downtown Dar es Salaam which has been abandoned for years. The fountain is in the middle of the Mnazi Mmoja grounds, one of the city’s oldest public areas which has been around for well over 50 years and where major national functions are regularly held.

A survey carried out by The Guardian showed that the once impressive-looking water fountain has now completely dried up and is no longer an attraction for city dwellers and visitors.
Contacted for comment on this situation, Ilala municipal council public relations officer Taabu Shaibu cited lack of funds as a main reason why municipal authorities have failed to maintain the fountain and its surrounding garden area.

“The authorities are aware of the problem and they have started working on the matter, including looking for funds to renovate the fountain and garden,” Shaibu said.
“As the municipality, we will need 400m/- to do a proper revamp of the area, including re-constructing the garden and improving the water fountain and other related facilities for public use,” she added.
She explained that the planned renovation is to be carried out jointly by the Ilala Municipal Council and the Prime Minister’s Office.

“Things like mapping and preparing drawings on how we want the place to look like have already been done and we’re currently waiting for the funds for the actual work to be released,” Shaibu asserted.
According to the municipal council spokesperson, there are a number of other projects to improve and modernise Ilala municipality through renovating infrastructures like roads, gardens and buildings.
“I can assure the public that we are committed to ensuring that the municipality looks better every day…just wait for the good things that are coming,” she added.

Among other things, the Mnazi Mmoja grounds are home to the Uhuru Torch monument, erected to symbolise the Freedom Torch placed at the peak of Mount Kilimanjaro on independence day, December 9, 1961.
“The park is very important to the country as it hosts a number of national and international events, both political and social…so regular renovation and maintenance is indeed crucial,” Shaibu acknowledged.
